Texas basketball loses freshman guard Chris Johnson to the portal

Johnson joins redshirt sophomore guard Gavin Perryman and sophomore forward Alex Anamekwe among the three Longhorns players who have either entered or intend to go into the transfer portal during the spring window this offseason. Perryman announced he was entering the transfer portal on April 1.

Anamekwe was the first Longhorns player to enter the portal a couple of weeks ago.

Johnson was a reserve guard for head coach Rodney Terry and the Longhorns who played in 17 games during the 2023-24 season. He averaged 1.1 points per game, 0.3 rebounds, and 0.4 assists during his true freshman campaign last season.

The 6-foot-5 and 180-pound guard Johnson is a native of Houston, TX. He signed with the Longhorns as a high-four-star recruit from Montverde Academy in the 2023 class.

Terry and the Longhorns landed Johnson's commitment just a few weeks after he had decommitted from head coach Bill Self and the Kansas Jayhawks in early June 2023.

Johnson was the highest-rated among the two recruits from the high school ranks that signed with the Longhorns in the 2023 class. Texas's other 2023 signee was freshman forward and former three-star recruit from Houston Devon Pryor.

Johnson has three years of eligibility remaining.

The spring transfer portal window for underclassmen in college hoops opened on March 18. This spring portal window stays open for 45 days.
