Texas ranks in AP preseason top 5 for first time since 2010
The preseason AP Poll was released on Aug. 12, and it had Texas football ranked No. 4. This is one spot lower than Texas and head coach Steve Sarkisian finished the 2023 season ranked at No. 3 in the final AP Poll.
Texas football slotted at its highest preseason ranking in the AP Poll in 14 years
It is the first time that the Longhorns are ranked in the top five of the preseason AP Poll in over a decade (since 2010).
Texas boasts four opponents on its regular season schedule ranked inside the AP preseason top 25, and two inside the top 10. Those four opponents Texas faces ranked in the preseason AP Poll are the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs, No. 9 Michigan Wolverines, No. 16 Oklahoma Sooners, and No. 20 Texas A&M Aggies.

Nine of the top 20 teams and four of the top 10 ranked in the preseason AP Poll are from the SEC. Rounding out the top 10 among the SEC teams are No. 1 Georgia, No. 4 Texas, No. 5 Alabama, and No. 6 Ole Miss.
Texas is ranked in the same position that it was in the preseason Coaches Poll, at No. 4. The Longhorns rank behind the same three teams in the preseason AP Poll that it did in the Coaches Poll, including the No. 3 Oregon Ducks, No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes, and No. 1 Georgia.
The only difference is Texas received one first-place vote in the preseason Coaches Poll. It didn't receive any first-place votes in the AP Poll. Since the preseason AP Poll was first released annually starting in 1950, the Longhorns have ranked inside the top 25 57 times.
