Texas Women's Basketball clinches a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament
By Brian Sweet
Texas Women's Basketball is a number-one seed in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2003-2004 season. After all the adversity the Longhorns have endured this season, this is an award for their hard work.
The Longhorns will host Drexel, Alabama, and Florida State in Austin. That's huge, considering the Longhorns will have a home-court advantage until the Sweet 16 if they make it that far. Let's look at what this means for the Longhorns as they prepare to defend their home court.
Texas Women's Basketball Number One Seed: How they were able to get the number one seed
When I saw the projections writing the bracketology article yesterday, it didn't look like Texas would get the number one seed. Iowa, USC, Stanford, and South Carolina looked like locks for the top seeds in the tournament.
Texas looked like they locked down the top second seed after winning the Big 12 Championship Title. I was driving home from Bible Study, listening to the tournament bracket unveiling, when suddenly, they announced Stanford was a second seed. It meant that Texas had a better head-to-head resume than Stanford.
Texas Women's Basketball Number One Seed: What does this mean?
Having a number one seed in the tournament means you host three other teams. It gives you a home-court advantage for at least two rounds before neutral arenas in the Sweet 16. It also means that Texas fans can pack the Moody Center and cheer on the Longhorns.
That should help the ladies have momentum going into the Sweet 16 if they make it there. Texas will play No. 16 Drexel in the first round, followed by who wins the Alabama-Florida State matchup.
Texas Women's Basketball Number One Seed: Conclusion
Being named a number one seed in the Women's NCAA Basketball Tournament is a huge accomplishment. It means you were recognized as one of the top teams in the nation, according to the tournament committee.
Texas has an opportunity to have a deep run in the tournament this season. It's up to the ladies how much longer they want to play basketball this season. The first round begins on March 22. May the odds be in the Longhorns' favor this year.
