Quinn Ewers declared for the 2025 NFL Draft despite many people saying he should stay in college, even suggesting he transfer away from Texas since Arch Manning was most likely the Longhorns' next starting quarterback.
Yes, Ewers got drafted, but not until the seventh round and just by the Miami Dolphins, who arguably have their "franchise" quarterback in Tua Tagovailoa, if he can stay healthy.
It's still a dream come true for Ewers, he has made it to the NFL after playing three years as the starting quarterback for the Texas Longhorns. However, the young quarterback did have a year of eligibility remaining and he absolutely could have stayed in college another year.
Average rookie contract for someone drafted in the 7th round
A top quarterback gets a lot of money, there's no denying it. For example, Oklahoma's former quarterback Kyler Murray was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. He signed a four-year rookie contract for $35.2 million.
While Miami's Cam Ward can expect a similar contract, Ewers can't. According to SBNation.com, the average salary on a rookie contract for a seventh-round pick is about $2.7 million.
- First round: $18.4 million
- Second round: $6.9 million
- Third round: $4.4 million
- Fourth round: $3.3 million
- Fifth round: $2.95 million
- Sixth round: $2.8 million
- Seventh round: $2.7 million
How much would Quinn Ewers have made if he had stayed in college?
On3's Pete Nakos reported on Ewers, before he ever declared for the Draft, saying that he would have been one of the highest-paid players in the transfer portal.
Ewers wouldn't have been alone as a transfer quarterback after starting at one of the top programs in the nation. Georgia's former QB1 transferred to Miami and made a ton of money in the portal, signing a $4 million NIL contract with the Hurricanes.
The moral of the story is, Ewers gets to be in the NFL, but he could have made upwards of $4 million if he had stayed in college and transferred to another program.
