In one of Texas HC Steve Sarkisian's recent media pressers, he addressed Will Muschamp and some of the topics regarding the hire after unexpectedly letting Pete Kwiatkowski go last week.
Two main things were unveiled during the press conference, most importantly the "why" behind it.
Steve Sarkisian was very honest and candid about it, and the way he described it was perfectly relatable:
"I feel very comfortable with Will being the head coach of that defense. That frees me up a little bit more time from an offensive perspective. Instead of robbing Peter to pay Paul, I'm able to let him go do his thing on defense and really be a great leader over there and head coach over there, which allows me to get back to doing the things that I believe that I'm really good at."
One of the most popular subjects amongst Longhorn Nation in 2025 was whether or not Sark still has "it" when it comes to being an offensive play caller. He was calling some really odd plays in crucial situations early on in the season that often times resulted in negative plays or the team not being able to convert on third downs.
This led to members of the media asking him in press conferences about whether or not he'd actually thought about giving up play calling duties.

It's nice to see that he acknowledged that the hire would allow him to basically focus on the offense again in 2026, now that he trusts Muschamp so much with the defense.
The other big takeaway from the Muschamp-hiring press conference is that it was revealed that Sarkisian has been essentially waiting to hire him since 2021.
Steve Sarkisian said "it wasn't the right time to go further down that road" in trying to get Will Muschamp in 2021 when Sark first got to Texas. Mentions family demands for Muschamp like his son playing high school football. Says now, "timing was just a little better for him…

This reinforces Sarkisian's statements and praise for Muschamp, as he's been basically waiting to get the "okay" from Muschamp since he's been hired at Texas.
Though Texas fans will always appreciate what Pete Kwiatkowski did for the Longhorns' defense, Will Muschamp brings excitement and personality to the defensive side of the ball for 2026 and beyond.
