The No. 2 Texas Longhorns and the No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs were halfway through one of the sloppiest first halves of a college football conference championship game ever. With the Horns leading the Dogs 6-3 as the two teams headed to their locker rooms, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian was not pleased.

In the first 30 minutes of the SEC Championship, the Longhorns were called for eight penalties amounting to 80 lost yards. On the other side of the ball, Georgia was called for just two penalties resulting in just 19 lost yards.

At halftime, ESPN's Laura Rutledge asked Sarkisian what he had to say about his team's mistakes on the field and how Texas would go about fixing them.

"Well hopefully they call them for holding one of these times too," Sarkisian said and then walked away.

Sarkisian's frustration with the penalty situation was readily apparent as the Texas head coach stormed off toward the locker room, even though the Horns had nearly five times as many yards as the Bulldogs did at halftime.

In the first half, Texas earned 260 total yards and Georgia earned a minimal 54 yards with quarterback Carson Beck completing just seven pass attempts and the Bulldog running backs earning negative yardage on the ground.

On the last play of the half, the Texas defensive line smashed into Beck and the quarterback stayed down as the play unfolded and the clock hit zeroes. Afterward, Beck had to be helped off the field. Georgia head coach Kirby Smart wasn't certain of his quarterback's status when he spoke to ESPN's Holly Rowe.

"He said his hand got hit... He’s gotta be aware of it and just get rid of the ball," Smart said. “He should be [available], I don’t know, we’ve gotta go look at it”

Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers completed 16 of 25 pass attempts for 228 yards through the air. Ewers lost 11 yards on the ground which running backs Quintrevion Wisner and Jaydon Blue tried to make up for with 43 combined rushing yards.
