For the second time in the winter NCAA Transfer Portal window, Texas football redshirt freshman defensive tackle Sydir Mitchell has decided he plans to enter the portal. Mitchell announced on social media last week (specifically on Dec. 11) that he planned to enter the transfer portal.

Texas football now officially sees DT Sydir Mitchell enter the portal in the second week of the winter transfer window

But he ultimately decided to stay at Texas after announcing his intentions to enter the transfer portal five days ago. He had never officially entered the transfer portal after announcing his plans to enter the transfer market last week.

On3 reported on Dec. 16 that Mitchell has officially decided to enter the transfer portal this time around.

Mitchell is the fourth defensive tackle for the Longhorns who has officially entered the transfer portal in the winter window.

In 2024, Mitchell played three dozen defensive snaps over five games for the Longhorns. He registered four combined tackles, one tackle for loss, and two defensive stops.

Mitchell couldn't consistently get in the mix in the defensive line rotation for the Longhorns this fall. He only took 19 more defensive snaps this season than he did during his true freshman campaign in 2023.

This is still a big hole to fill for defensive line coach Kenny Baker and the Longhorns at defensive tackle for the upcoming offseason. Mitchell was the only remaining defensive lineman on the projected returning roster for the 2025 season for the Longhorns with live-game defensive snaps at zero-tech this fall.

Texas has landed one portal defensive tackle commitment in the winter transfer window so far, former Purdue Boilermakers senior grad transfer Cole Brevard. The Longhorns are also looking for more defensive tackle help in the portal this month in the winter window, as they are scheduled to host former UCF Knights senior defensive tackle Lee Hunter for a visit starting today (Dec. 16).

The four Texas defensive tackles who have officially entered the portal in the winter transfer window in the past week are Mitchell, redshirt sophomore Jaray Bledsoe, redshirt sophomore Aaron Bryant, and senior Tia Savea.
