Per On3's Hayes Fawcett, redshirt freshman Texas football transfer defensive tackle Sydir Mitchell has committed to the LSU Tigers on Dec. 20. Mitchell spent two seasons at Texas and has three years of eligibility remaining.
Defensive tackle Sydir Mitchell leaves Texas football for another school in the SEC via the transfer portal
In the 2024 season at Texas, Mitchell played five games, registering four combined tackles, one tackle for loss, and two defensive stops. He played nine games total in two seasons at Texas. Four of the nine games Mitchell played at Texas were during his true freshman season in 2023, allowing him to preserve his year of eligibility with the four-game redshirt rule.
This news comes after Mitchell had multiple decisions to enter the transfer portal in the past nine days. Mitchell officially entered the transfer portal on Dec. 16, four days before transferring to LSU.
Mitchell re-joins defensive line coach Bo Davis at LSU, who was the DL coach at Texas when he committed to play for the Longhorns a couple of years ago.
The big 6-foot-6 and 350-pound defensive tackle Mitchell was never able to consistently contribute to the defensive line rotation at nose tackle for the Longhorns in the SEC. He'll now look to be developed at another SEC school in the trenches at LSU with Davis.
Mitchell, a four-star prospect from Oradell (NJ) Bergen Catholic High School, signed with the Longhorns over the Georgia Bulldogs, Texas A&M Aggies, and Miami Hurricanes in the 2023 recruiting class. He was a top-250-rated prospect coming out of high school and was Texas's only defensive tackle to sign in the 2023 recruiting class.
He ranked as the No. 205 prospect nationally in the 2023 class in the 247Sports Composite, No. 25 defensive lineman, and No. 3 from New Jersey.
