In a best-of-three series, it is never good to lose the first game. Statistically, the team that wins the first game in the series typically ends up winning the series altogether and moving on. When it comes to the softball Super Regional round, that certainly tends to be the case, but not for Texas.
For six years straight, Texas has dropped the first game of the Super Regional round, and on Friday night, they made it seven straight years. In a rough 4-1 loss to Arizona State Friday night in Game 1 of the Super Regional round, the Longhorns now have to play with their backs against the wall in order to continue their season.
Texas fans shouldn't be too worried, though, as this is a position Texas is used to being in.
There is no need to hit the panic button at Texas 4-1 loss vs. Arizona State in Game 1 of Super Regional
With Teagan Kavan in the circle and the joy of knowing rival Oklahoma had already fallen in their first Super Regional game, it felt like everything could go right for Texas. Even though the Longhorns had to face Arizona State ace Kenzie Brown, the Longhorns were on a roll.
Texas didn't want to lose its seventh straight Super Regional opening game, but that seems to be how the cards fell. Kavan wasn't quite as sharp as she normally is, and the Sun Devils were able to hang four runs on the 2025 Women's College World Series Most Outstanding Player. The bats were quiet for the Longhorns as well, a recent struggle Texas desperately needs to figure out.
Now, while Texas hasn't made it to the Women's College World Series every year when they have dropped Game 1 in the Super Regional, they have in three of the last six. That gives the Longhorns a true 50/50 chance to get past the Sun Devils.
The good news is that if Brown is in the circle again, Texas saw everything they needed to out of Arizona State's ace and will be ready to come in Game 2. Everything seems to be working for Texas here, despite the fact that they have to win this game to force a Game 3.
This is not unfamiliar territory for the Longhorns, and not even unfamiliar territory for a lot of girls on this team. Texas needs to rally just like they have in years past in order to win the next two games and continue to defend its National Championship from a year ago.
