Despite the Longhorns having a far-from-ideal season, one Texas men's basketball player has stood out as an absolute star. Freshman guard Tre Johnson, who has played to the level of Longhorn legend Kevin Durant, has led the team in scoring and minutes throughout the year.
Now, the true freshman is getting the national recognition that he so greatly deserves. On Tuesday, March 4, Johnson was named as a finalist for the Jerry West Award, which is given to the best shooting guard in college basketball every year.

Johnson is one of five finalists on the list, including veteran Arizona guard Caleb Love, Baylor freshman guard VJ Edgecombe, Memphis sophomore guard PJ Haggerty, and Tennessee senior guard Chaz Lanier.
Tre Johnson freshman season stats
- 33.9 minutes per game
- 20.6 points per game
- 3.1 rebounds per game
- 2.6 assists per game
- 0.9 steals per game
- 0.3 blocks per game
Johnson leads the Horns in scoring and has the second most assists this season, only trailing Julian Larry. The freshman has racked up a resounding 555 points so far this season, 209 more points than forward Athur Kaluma who has the second most.
The Longhorns are just 16-13 overall and are an abysmal 5-11 in conference play with just two regular season games remaining. However, despite his team's struggles, Johnson has continued to prove that he was worth all of the hype that surrounded him before the season started.
Texas will take on the No. 25 Mississippi State Bulldogs and the Oklahoma Sooners in its final two games of the regular season. The Longhorns are currently sitting at No. 13 in the SEC standings as the conference tournament rapidly approaches.
