Texas heating up again as the favorite to land blue-chip Tennessee SG transfer

Word on the street is that Sean Miller and Texas basketball could be gaining another high-level frontcourt transfer very soon.

The Longhorns have already landed one of the best point guards and power forwards in the 2026 transfer portal, and now it looks like they could be adding one of the best shooting guards as well in the near future. 4-star SG/SF Amari Evans has officially been crystal-balled by multiple recruiting experts to land with Texas soon.

The 6'5", 220-pound shooting guard played in 35 games for the Volunteers in the 2025/2026 season, including a couple of starts to end the year. Despite only averaging 14.4 minutes per game as a true freshman last season, he tied for third on the team in total steals with 34, and he was Rick Barnes' first player off the bench in every game.

He also spent time at small forward for Tennessee because of his size, showing the ability to successfully defend larger players due to his stockier 220-pound frame. His defensive prowess was a big reason why he was so valuable to Rick Barnes last year, and it's also a huge factor in why Sean Miller wants him in Austin heading into next season.

Evans would immediately upgrade Texas' perimeter defense, which was obviously a big problem in Coach Miller's first season at the helm.

If Evans actually does choose the Longhorns, it'll be interesting to see how he's used next season. Could Sean Miller be planning on playing him at small forward with the departure of Dailyn Swain? A potential starting lineup of PG Isaiah Johnson, SG Austin Goosby, SF Amari Evans, PF David Punch, and C Matas Vokietaitis does sound pretty enticing.

It's crazy to think about the fact that Texas will most likely have four new starters next season after the type of run they had in the 2026 NCAA Tournament this year.
