Just over two months ago, four-star safety Junior Tu'upo committed to the Texas Longhorns and head coach Steve Sarkisian, choosing the 40 Acres as his future home over a long list of other powerhouse programs that sent him an offer.
"It’s a BLESSING to have this opportunity, HOOK’EM!!" Tu'upo said upon his commitment. "We're home!! HOOK'EM."
Now, as is seemingly commonplace in the current era of college football, Tu'upo is doing everything but solidifying his commitment to the Horns.
In fact, Tu'upo seems to regard a pair of SEC programs rather highly, despite having committed to a team in the same conference: the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Auburn Tigers.
"They haven’t stopped recruiting. They know that they are close, and they are still trying to get me," Tu'upo recently told On3's Chad Simmons.
Well, all of a sudden Tu'upo's commitment to the Longhorns feels a lot less like a commitment and a lot more like a placeholder...

Unfortunately for Texas, but heavily in the Crimson Tide and the Tigers' favor, is the simple fact that Tu'upo grew up in Alabama, playing high school football in Alabaster, only one hour from Tuscaloosa and just two hours from Auburn.
So, both teams can lean into the home-state allure that the Horns are having to go against, even with his commitment already in their back pocket.
Because of the proximity to his hometown, Tu'upo has made the most visits to his home-state teams, making five trips to Auburn and two trips to Alabama. And Texas? Well, he has made the trip to Austin on just one occasion, taking an official visit with the Longhorns this summer.
Tu'upo is one of a flood of blue-chip prospects committed to Texas in the class of 2027, alongside five-star wide receiver Easton Royal, five-star interior offensive lineman Ismael Camara, and more.
The class currently ranks sixth in the nation and second in the SEC, only trailing the Texas A&M Aggies. However, with Royal already viewed as a potential risk for flipping to another program, the possibility of Tu'upo flipping his commitment should raise a red flag.
At the end of the day, there's a reason that Tu'upo initially committed to the Longhorns, despite already holding offers from Alabama and Auburn. Hopefully, Sarkisian can continue to lean into whatever that reason was to cement Tu'upo's commitment.
