Texas primed for revenge in SEC Championship after preseason media poll was released

Over the last two years in the SEC, the Texas Longhorns have had one insurmountable hurdle in their path: the Georgia Bulldogs.

In their two regular-season meetings and SEC Championship game matchup, the Dawgs have trounced the Horns, going 3-0 and balancing the scales in their decades-long history.

Now, the two are poised at the top of the conference, as the two highest-ranked teams in the SEC Preseason Media Poll, following the conference's media days.

Texas only trails 1 team in SEC Preseason Media Poll

While the Longhorns and the Bulldogs aren't scheduled to play each other in the regular season this year, if the preseason poll is how the conference rankings stand at the end of the year, Texas and Georgia would meet in the SEC Championship once again.

What a perfect opportunity for revenge. Not only would it be a rematch in the conference championship, but it would be a chance for the Horns to show the world (and, more specifically, the media) that they deserved to be ranked ahead of Georgia.

Of course, before Texas can even think about the conference title game, the Horns have to get through the Tennessee Volunteers, Oklahoma Sooners, Florida Gators, Ole Miss Rebels, Mississippi State Bulldogs, Missouri Tigers, LSU Tigers, Arkansas Razorbacks, and Texas A&M Aggies, seven of which are now ranked in the top 10 of the SEC.

Most notably, Texas will face the fourth-ranked Aggies and fifth-ranked LSU Tigers on the road, while also hosting the third-ranked Rebels and playing the seventh-ranked Sooners in the annual Red River Rivalry on "neutral" turf.

Even with the Razorbacks ranked 16th in the conference (last place), a rivalry game like that could go in anyone's direction. Not to mention the fact that Texas has to face the Ohio State Buckeyes once again, and while the game won't affect SEC standings, it's yet another monstrous matchup on the horizon.

In other words, the Longhorns have an undeniable uphill battle ahead of them as they traverse one of the most difficult schedules in the country, much less the confernce, in hopes of returning to the SEC Championship game.

Then, the ultimate goal, as Colin Simmons made clear at the SEC Media Days, is a return to the College Football Playoff and the National Championship, bringing home the hardware that has eluded the Horns for over two decades.
