The rules committee just changed the formatting for the NCAA Tournament, and though it could be annoying to some fans, it probably makes things a whole lot easier for the Texas Longhorns going forward.
Over the past decade or so, Texas has been considered a "bubble" team more often than not, and the new-look tournament will lower the barrier for programs like the Longhorns to qualify on a more consistent basis.
Sean Miller and Texas could have more chances to dominate in March
Based on how the opening round will work beginning in 2027, more of the exciting teams that are considered to be "on the bubble" a lot, such as Texas, San Diego State, and VCU, will be able to have a better chance to make the opening round.
This should make things much more exciting in the future, as programs that probably deserve to be in, but usually aren't, will actually get in.
Let's take a look at the changes:
- The tournament field will move to 76 teams from 68, which has been the case since 2011.
- There will be 12 total games during the opening round as opposed to 4.
- There will be 12 automatic qualifiers instead of 4.
- There will be 12 at-large teams as opposed to 4.
- 3 games will be played per day instead of 2, per site.
- All games were played in Dayton, OH, but now they'll be split between two locations. Half in Dayton, and half at a location TBD.

Longhorns fans should be incredibly excited about the change because there will be much more optimism and anticipation for the postseason every year. With how Sean Miller guided the 2025/2026 team through the tournament this season, it's not hard to see that he's more of a "March Madness" focused coach than a regular-season coach.
Texas looked incredibly different over the last quarter of the season and into March than they did throughout most of the year. They ended up being a much more disciplined and focused program when it got closer to the big dance.
I'm not sure about the rest of Longhorn Nation, but that's the type of team that I want to watch more often going forward.
The NCAA Tournament is one of the most exciting and most viewed sporting events every year, and the new formatting should only make it more competitive overall.
