After an incredible freshman season, only rivaled by Longhorn legend Kevin Durant's first and only year with the Horns, Texas guard Tre Johnson is ready to look towards the next step in his young career.
On Tuesday, April 8, Johnson joined Malika Andrews on NBA Today to announce that he would forego the rest of his eligibility (for now) and declare for the 2025 NBA Draft.
Tre Johnson freshman season stats
- 19.9 points per game
- 3.1 rebounds per game
- 2.7 assists per game
- 0.9 steals per game
- 0.3 blocks per game
Johnson was a large part of why the Texas Longhorns found any of their minimal success over the 2024-25 season, and was a star as the Horns made an unexpected run to the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament.

In the conference tournament, Johnson scored 50 points over three games as well as contributing seven assists, four rebounds, and three steals. The freshman phenom also racked up 23 points and six rebounds against the Xavier Musketeers in the Horns' First Four game of the NCAA Tournament.
While many Texas fans hoped that Johnson would return for more time with the Texas team, especially under new head coach Sean Miller, it isn't surprising that the young guard declared for the Draft after his incredible freshman season.
As of now, Johnson is projected to be a lottery pick in the upcoming Draft. This means he is expected to hear his name called within the first four draft picks.
The 2025 NBA Draft is set for Wednesday, June 25. Collegiate players have until 11:59 p.m. ET on April 26 to officially declare for the Draft; however, once they declare, they then have until June 15 to withdraw their name.
