Texas Women's Basketball has been heading in the right direction under Vic Schaefer and his coaching staff. We have seen some massive upsets this season, like South Carolina. The players buy into his program, and everything moves like a smooth train ride through the Rocky Mountains.
AD Chris del Conte extends Texas women's basketball head coach Vic Schaefer beyond the end of the 2020s decade
With how well they are doing this season, I'm sure some college basketball programs have considered poaching Schaefer away from Texas.
Yesterday, it was announced that Vic Schaefer and Texas agreed to a three-year contract extension that would run through the 2030 season. This was long overdue after their March Madness run last season.
It also gives Texas a coach who knows how to navigate the SEC Conference. Texas wouldn't have the record it has this season if it weren't for Schaefer on his coaching staff. With how the ladies have played this season, it feels like they have been in the SEC for multiple seasons.
Shaefer has had success at Texas over the course of his tenure. He has a 134-34 overall record and three Elite Eight appearances. This wasn't the only SEC School he was a head coach for. He was also the women's basketball coach at Mississippi State, where he had a 221-62 record and won back-to-back national championships in 2017-2018. It seems like the success at Mississippi State has made its way to Austin.
Now that the contract is out of the way, Schaefer can continue to lead the basketball program through the SEC. Today's game against LSU will have that same atmosphere as on Super Bowl Sunday when Texas beat South Carolina. It will be one rowdy arena this afternoon.
I'm sure the girls are happy Schaefer will remain their head coach. However, I'm concerned that Texas will play against Kim Mulkey and the Tigers.
Mulkey is one of those coaches who will change her game plan who will instantly if it's not working. As someone who watched her coach against Abilene Christian in March Madness back in 2019, she should have the Longhorns' respect.
She has many returning members from their March Madness run last season. The Longhorns must be solid on defense like they did against South Carolina; it could be a long afternoon.
I know Schaefer will have his team prepared for another great showdown in Austin this afternoon. Texas fans can relax now that he signed a contract through 2030. The news should also help with recruitment this summer.
The Longhorns have been trying to recruit some great talent to solidify their roster next season. Here are too many more wins under Vic Schaefer's tenure as the Texas Women's Basketball Head Coach.
