Texas Longhorns Recruiting: Kai Locksley Would be a Great Security Blanket
Four-star athlete Kai Locksley just wrapped up his official visit to Texas. By all accounts, he enjoyed the visit and now must go home to weigh his options.
John Burt gave the current Florida State Seminoles pledge something else to think about with his recommitment to Texas today. Burt and Locksley are friends.
Locksley will need to decide if Texas or Florida State would be a better fit. If he wants to play quarterback, the Longhorns give him the best chance at playing the position.

The Seminoles will lose Jameis Winston. But the quarterback cupboard is not bare in Tallahassee. Sean Maguire figures to be the favorite to start in 2015. Maguire saw spot duty in 2013 and 14, but did start the Clemson game when Winston was suspended. John Franklin III and JJ Cosentino are in the mix after watching from the sidelines last year. Incoming freshman De’Andre Johnson and Deondre Francois will also get a shot at earning playing time this season.
At Texas he would be competing against Jerrod Heard, Tyrone Swoopes and possibly Kyler Murray. Murray is no sure thing at this point, and Swoopes struggled to master the position to say the least. Unless Charlie Strong hands the keys to the program back to Swoopes, the Longhorns will be starting a quarterback with zero college experience.
Should Murray decide to bolt for College Station, Texas will need someone from the 2015 class. Locksley would not only fit the bill, he would probably fit right in.
Texas Longhorns
The offense is rumored to be changing to a spread offense to take advantage of Heard’s skillset. This would also suit Locksley. Neither is very accurate throwing the ball down field, but both are running threats – something Swoopes did not do much of in 2014. If the offense line doesn’t show improvement, a mobile quarterback will be a necessity.
Should the Longhorns land a running back like Chris Warren or Soso Jamabo, you can bet the offense will be run-heavy this year. We should also see more zone reads in 2015 to maximize Heard, Murray or Locksley’s athletic talents.
If Locksley does end up moving to wide receiver he might consider Florida State the better choice since the receiving depth behind Rashad Greene was uninspiring. Texas has a talented group of young receivers. There may not be enough footballs to go around among the wideouts.
It all comes down to which position he truly wants to play in college. If quarterback is his choice, Texas fans will welcome him with open arms.
