48. 467. 70. 476. Final

This embarrassing loss for the Texas basketball program, by the final score of 70-48, on Dec. 21 at the hands of the Providence Friars was a good encapsulation of almost all that went wrong for them so far this season. At this time, the Friars held a record of just 7-6 and the Longhorns were trying to build up their NCAA Tournament resume in non-conference play.

The Longhorns couldn’t handle the best guards that Providence brought to the table. Alpha Diallo and Kalif Young finished up with 20 points, 22 rebounds, seven assists, and three steals by themselves. Although Diallo shot just 5-of-14 from the field, he was efficient in about every other part of his game.

Anytime Texas is outmatched athletically either on the perimeter, at the center position, or both, then they really struggle. Texas was outmatched big time on the perimeter against Providence. But the worst part about that was that the only players that scored in double figures for the Longhorns were sophomore guard Courtney Ramey and Coleman.

Jase Febres, Jericho Sims, and Gerald Liddell were no shows for the Longhorns in this loss. Those three along with a bad effort for Texas’ bench helped them to a team field goal shooting percentage of 31.7. Texas was even worse with their three-point shooting, as they finished up just 3-of-21 from downtown in this 22-point loss.
