Texas Football: 3 players who will become household names in 2020
The least proven player on this list for the Longhorns that is also a star truly ready to breakout is the former five-star Cuero wide receiver recruit and the 6-foot-1 and 215 pound converted running back Jordan Whittington. The nation’s No. 34 2019 high school prospect, No. 2 athlete, and No. 6 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite), will have his first real shot at breaking through this coming season.
Whittington’s true freshman campaign ended before it truly started with a recurring sports hernia problem.
Last offseason in spring ball, Herman and former offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Tim Beck moved Whittington from running back to wide receiver to help fill depth holes at the position. But Texas might actually be deeper at running back by this point than they are in the receiving corps.
There will be plenty of opportunity for the rising redshirt freshman Whittington to make an impact in the passing game early in his time on the Forty Acres. The departures of the senior star wide receiver combination of Collin Johnson and Devin Duvernay puts the Longhorns in a difficult spot to fill production from last season.
Texas will have to fill that production with someone like Whittington, rising sophomore Jake Smith, rising junior Brennan Eagles (if he winds up playing a full season this fall), or the former Michigan Wolverines grad transfer rising senior Tarik Black. Whittington might be the most flat out talented of that group of wideouts, though.
