Losing out to the rival Sooners on four-star LBJ cornerback target Latrell McCutchin could partially shift the landscape of defensive back recruiting for the rest of the 2021 cycle in the Big 12. But Texas still landed commitments from three four-star defensive backs in the last three weeks. Along with the pledge from Johnson, Texas landed Kennedale safety JD Coffey III and Kimball cornerback Ishmael Ibraheem.

However, the Longhorns could find themselves with better fortunes in pursuing the likes of McCutchin’s teammate in the LBJ defensive backfield and four-star safety Andrew Mukuba. Although he’s not rated quite as highly as McCutchin, Mukuba could add some valuable depth at the safety position for the future on the Forty Acres.

The 6-foot and 185 pound Austin, TX, native Mukuba gives the Longhorns the opportunity to keep another hometown kid in their backyard through his college career. Mukuba ranks as the nation’s No. 239 2021 high school prospect, No. 12 safety, and No. 40 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite).

The 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions does give a pretty significant edge to pick the Longhorns over the rest of the field. Mukuba holds offers from more than 30 schools outside of that from the Longhorns. The highlights of the rest of the schools that offered him thus far includes the Clemson Tigers, Oklahoma, LSU, Alabama, Georgia, and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
