3) Texas football players who could breakout vs. Tech: Jake Smith

One Longhorn wide receiver that will be making his debut next weekend is sophomore former four-star recruit Jake Smith. Texas missed Smith in the season opener due to a hamstring injury he suffered in practice the week leading up to the UTEP game. But he should be back for the matchup this coming weekend against Texas Tech.

With redshirt freshman slot wide receiver Jordan Whittington out at least into October with a slight tear in his meniscus, Smith will come to the forefront in this game. Whittington only got to play in the first half of the UTEP game before coming up limping just before halftime on a play around the goal line.

However, Smith will play a big role in the success of the passing game against Texas Tech. His speed, elusiveness, and overall versatility allows him to stretch the field for this offense. The combination of Smith, along with redshirt sophomore Joshua Moore, senior Tarik Black, and junior Brennan Eagles could be special in Lubbock.

Given how big of a threat Moore was, along with Black, in the season opener, Texas Tech is going to have to spread their defensive backs thin. Smith should have the opportunity to find a lot of open field and have a big day come Saturday afternoon. Watch out for Smith to build momentum this season with a big debut.
