Could Texas football challenge SMU for 4-Star WR Jordan Hudson?
One of the biggest decisions to watch among targets of the 2022 Texas football recruiting class for the remainder of the holiday weekend comes from the four-star Garland wide receiver and former Oklahoma Sooners commit Jordan Hudson. The Texas native and product of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex Hudson is one of multiple big-time Texas targets that is announcing his decision this weekend.
The announcement for Hudson specifically is set to come on July 4, with the time undisclosed up to this point. The final three schools that Hudson is down to includes the Longhorns, Alabama Crimson Tide, and SMU Mustangs. Texas and SMU looked like two of the frontrunners for Hudson since his June 14 decommitment from Oklahoma.
Alabama might be the school in third place for Hudson, but he still is keeping his decision mostly under wraps. According to a report from 247Sports over the weekend (paid content), Hudson is still undecided on the specific time of his July 4 announcement and where he will ultimately commit to.

SMU does look like the team to beat at this point to get the commitment of Hudson. Alabama might be able to challenge if the decision of Hudson surprises this weekend. As it stood heading into the weekend, it looked like the pecking order would be Texas and then Alabama if something doesn’t work out with Hudson committing to SMU.
Of the five expert 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions in for Hudson as of the morning of July 4, all are going with him landing with head coach Sonny Dykes and the Mustangs. And the Rivals FutureCast has two-third of their analysts and publishers picking Hudson’s commitment to land with SMU over the likes of Texas and Alabama.
Hudson was one of multiple Oklahoma decommits at the wide receiver position during the month of June. He could wind up with one of Oklahoma’s rivals if he surprises and gives his pledge to Texas. But he is likely to land with SMU.
The other Oklahoma decommit from the past few weeks is the four-star Edmond-Santa Fe wide receiver Talyn Shettron, who gave his commitment to the Oklahoma State Cowboys in the past week. That’s not great news for head coach Lincoln Riley and the Sooners heading into the dead period this month.

Texas did host Hudson for a visit last month, which seemingly went well. But all of the momentum headed in favor of the Mustangs in the past three weeks since Hudson’s decommitment from the Sooners. SMU hosted Hudson for an official visit back on June 17.
SMU has running backs coach Ra’Shaad Samples and wide receivers coach David Gru as the top recruiters after Hudson. Meanwhile, Texas has second-year wide receivers coach Andre Coleman as the primary recruiter now after Hudson. Previously they had now-former cornerbacks coach Jay Valai as his primary recruiter.
Texas had itself a nice week on the recruiting trail at the outset of the dead period. The 2022 class landed a trio of commitments heading into the holiday weekend including four-star Tyler Legacy (TX) running back Jamarion Miller, four-star Frisco interior offensive lineman Cole Hutson, and three-star Westlake interior offensive lineman Connor Robertson.
