Texas football falling behind A&M, Oregon, for 5-Star OT Kelvin Banks
There are two big decisions to watch for top targets of the 2022 Texas football recruiting class on July 4. To cap off the holiday weekend, Texas is set to see the likes of four-star Garland wide receiver Jordan Hudson and five-star Summer Creek offensive tackle Kelvin Banks announce their decisions by the end of the day on July 4.
Texas looked to be one of the frontrunners for at least the past few weeks for the two decommits of the Oklahoma schools. Hudson is a former Oklahoma Sooners commit that re-opened his recruitment last month. And Banks is a former Oklahoma State Cowboys commit that had his recruitment re-opened for a long time now.
But Banks is definitely the more crucial of these two Longhorns 2022 targets announcing a decision during the holiday weekend. Banks is one of likely two top offensive line targets for the Longhorns 2022 class, alongside the five-star Bowie offensive guard Devon Campbell.
Moreover, Texas doesn’t look to be sitting in the most favorable position with Banks ahead of his July 4 commitment. A quick report from Gigem247 on the evening of July 3 (paid content) indicates that the rival Texas A&M Aggies and Oregon Ducks are the top two schools that Banks is now deciding between for his commitment this weekend.
Indicators are there that the 2022 Texas football recruiting class is behind Oregon and Texas A&M for Kelvin Banks
Texas could still be in the mix, but Oregon and Texas A&M are likely to be the schools that Banks will decide between. That is a big blow to new head coach Steve Sarkisian and offensive line coach/offensive coordinator Kyle Flood if that turns out to be true.
Texas A&M was the final official visit that Banks took prior to his decision date. He was on campus in College Station for an official visit back on June 24. That came one week after his June 18 official visit with the Longhorns.
It is also noteworthy that Banks had an official visit with the Ducks on June 8, which turned out to be a bigger hit than most originally thought.
Oregon turned out to be a major player for some of the top offensive line targets in-state for the Longhorns. Head coach Mario Cristobal and offensive line coach Alex Mirabal have recruited Banks and three-star Duncanville offensive tackle Cameron Williams well. Oregon landed a commitment from Williams over the likes of the Longhorns and Sooners this week.
There’s no doubt that it will hurt for Sark, Flood, and the Longhorns if they wind up missing out on the commitment from Banks to round out the holiday weekend. But that just means it is that much more important to land a commitment from Campbell when it’s all said and done.
Texas did still have a big week on the recruiting trail, landing a trio of commits since June 28. Along the offensive line, the Longhorns did land their initial commits on July 1. Those commitments came from four-star Frisco interior offensive lineman Cole Huston and three-star Westlake interior offensive lineman Connor Robertson.
