One of the most underrated signees in the Longhorns 2021 class, and a true gem find at the time for former head coach Tom Herman and his staff, is the four-star recruit and incoming freshman running back Jonathon Brooks. Although he might not get many reps in key game action out of the gates this fall, Brooks is certainly making a case for why he should be considered to get more playing time down the stretch.

Texas is likely deeper at the running back position this year than any other on either side of the ball. That won’t really play to Brooks’ ability to make an immediate impact. But he could still make waves in limited game action with what he’s showed thus far.

Brooks did manage to break off one of the bigger runs of the first fall scrimmage, although once again he got limited reps. This shows why Sark and new offensive line coach/offensive coordinator Kyle Flood should give him more looks throughout the remainder of fall camp.

Texas is likely to start out the season with star sophomore Bijan Robinson, former Alabama transfer and redshirt sophomore Keilan Robinson, junior Roschon Johnson, and maybe even senior Daniel Young, ahead of Brooks on the depth chart. But there’s a good chance that Brooks could work himself into the third or fourth slot on the depth chart by season’s end.

And if injuries do start to pile up at any point of the season, then Brooks should be able to slide up the depth chart no problem and get his opportunity to make an early impact.

Brooks is a star coming out of Hallettsville High School in Texas. He was one of the few blue-chip skill position commits in the 2021 signing class for Sark and the Longhorns.
