The writing was on the wall for a good while now that Sark and the Longhorns were going to lose the commitment from Winfield if head coach Mel Tucker and the Michigan State Spartans kept pressing as they had of late. And it looks like it’s now only a matter of time before Winfield essentially flipped his commitment from Texas to Michigan State.

Now, it looks like Winfield is set for a signing day decision. This will likely come during the Early Signing Period.

Winfield was originally the first commit that Sark landed in the 2022 class as he was hired to be the next Texas head coach to replace Tom Herman. And knowing that the Longhorns needed to build up some skill position depth in the 2022 class, and likely by way of the NCAA Transfer Portal next offseason, losing Winfield really hurts.

Texas officially saw Winfield de-commit from the 2022 class in the midst of an eventual win over the Kansas State Wildcats at home at DKR on Black Friday. This came just 24 hours roughly after Texas’ previous de-commitment in the form of the in-state running back Miller.

Winfield de-committing leaves the Longhorns with just one blue-chip commit in the 2022 class in four-star Spearman (TX) product Brenen Thompson. Texas will need to close out strong at the wide receiver position in the 2022 class now.

Texas is probably going to need to add more than just one wide receiver signee heading into next offseason. With Winfield likely headed for Michigan State now, Texas is up to three de-commits in the 2022 class at the wide receiver position dating back to losing three-star Lancaster product Phaizon Wilson.
