If the Longhorns want an immediate injection of talent at the wide receiver position heading into the offseason, then the coaching staff needs to be all over what is happening at Oklahoma right now in terms of roster attrition. And it is clear that Texas is going to have to restore their depth in the receiving corps entering the offseason.

Texas already lost the likes of redshirt junior wide receivers Joshua Moore and Al’Vonte Woodard to the transfer portal entering the offseason. Losing Moore is sizable, but Woodard didn’t make much of an impact in the last couple of years at Texas.

Nonetheless, the combination of losing some of these wideouts to the transfer portal, missing out on the elite five-star Frisco-Liberty wide receiver Evan Stewart to the Texas A&M Aggies, and seeing the de-commitment of four-star Lewisville product Armani Winfield, means that Texas needs to find depth somewhere. Texas is not going to get the second coming of four-star Spearman (TX) wideout Brenen Thompson right now in pretty much any scenario.

This is why I firmly believe that someone like the former elite five-star recruit and rising redshirt sophomore star Theo Wease should be a big-time target at wide receiver out of the transfer portal this offseason. Wease missed essentially the entirety of the 2021 season after an injury in fall camp. But his 2020 campaign gave some insight into what he could become in the near future.

Last fall, Wease registered 37 catches for 530 receiving yards (around 14 yards per catch) with four touchdown catches. Wease was figured to be a star in the making for the Sooners this season, but that didn’t come to fruition thanks to an injury issue.

It’s hard to find many more positive impact wideouts for Texas to get out the transfer portal outside of Wease.
