Going to the Group of Five level for help out of the transfer portal can clearly provide mixed results. Texas figured that out by going after what looked to be either a slow transition or at least a poor scheme fit, by getting the former Freshman All-American and New Mexico State Aggies linebacker Devin Richardson out of the transfer portal last offseason.

I thought new co-defensive coordinators/linebackers coaches Pete Kwiatkowski and Jeff Choate could make this scheme fit work with a linebacker that was a versatile playmaker at New Mexico State in Richardson. But Texas can find a better scheme fit and get depth in an area of need by getting more wide receiver help.

One target that could bring a ton of value to the table for the Longhorns right away is the former Florida International Panthers breakout freshman wide receiver, Tyrese Chambers. There are some real signs that Chambers is one of the brightest young star wide receivers in the Group of Five, and he still has a long way to go.

There are actually two new entrants to the transfer portal from FIU that Texas should consider sending an offer out to. The other is a fellow breakthrough underclassman and sophomore offensive tackle Miles Frazier. But Texas doesn’t look to have sent out an offer to Chambers or Frazier as of yet.

Chambers is a freshman wideout that already has a 1,000-receiving yard season under his belt with nine receiving touchdowns. He was one of the highest-graded freshman wide receivers in the entire country. And he was one of the highest-graded wideouts of anyone in the Group of Five during the regular season.

There are still areas for Chambers to improve, especially in terms of consistency in drops and fumbles. But you can’t doubt his explosiveness and route-running ability at 6-foot-1 and 185 pounds.

The thought of what Texas could do with a top four at wideout that consists of Chambers, Xavier Worthy, Jordan Whittington, and Troy Omeire (if he ever gets healthy) is pretty special.
