TCU might’ve just ruined their shot with Quinn Ewers
The talk of the town on the Forty Acres continues to be the recruitment by the Texas football program of the former elite five-star Southlake Carroll quarterback recruit and Ohio State Buckeyes freshman transfer Quinn Ewers. Texas is in the running to land the commitment of Ewers out of the NCAA Transfer Portal along with the Texas Tech Red Raiders and the TCU Horned Frogs.
There might be other schools that have reached out to Ewers, but there weren’t any visits in place yet or meaningful traction that is known.
Ewers was on a visit with the TCU coaching staff to start off the week. And considering the hype that Texas Tech and new head coach Joey McGuire generated over the weekend with Ewers’ visit to Lubbock, there was some concern on the Texas side that the Horned Frogs could somehow generate a similar type of buzz.
But that doesn’t appear to be the case in the day following Ewers’ visit with TCU. According to a report from Inside Texas (part of the On3 Network, paid content), TCU didn’t come out of the visit with Ewers doing themselves any favors with an action they took on the recruiting trail early this week.
Texas football might not have to worry as much about TCU with Quinn Ewers after landing QB Josh Hoover
TCU landed a commitment from a local three-star quarterback and Rockwall-Heath product Josh Hoover on Dec. 6. Landing this commitment from Hoover could prove that new head coach Sonny Dykes and the Mustangs don’t feel too confident about their odds with Ewers after the Dec. 6 visit.
While Hoover isn’t the most highly ranked quarterback in the 2022 class, the timing of this is nearly unmistakable. All in all, it feels like this event on the recruiting trail for Dykes and the Horned Frogs to land Hoover this week could be an indication that this race is going to boil down to Texas and Texas Tech.
One of the potential points of appeal for Ewers with Texas Tech is the fact that he could have the most immediate and sustained path to consistent playing time, almost no matter what. Texas Tech hasn’t taken a quarterback in their 2022 class as of yet. And it wouldn’t surprise me if they didn’t take a quarterback if they were the school that Ewers chose in the end.
Texas does hold a commitment from the touted four-star Junipero Serra quarterback Maalik Murphy in their 2022 class. And it doesn’t look like the competition from Ewers will phase Murphy. But Ewers knows that Murphy is also committed and that will be part of what he faces if he chooses Texas as his next landing spot.
Making it through the visits in the last couple of days without a commitment to the Red Raiders or Horned Frogs likely bodes well for the Longhorns. And if Ewers is ready to make a decision, it is likely going to come later this week.
