A really busy morning on the first signing day for the 2022 Texas football recruiting class and head coach Steve Sarkisian has amounted to an enormous wave of momentum at the right time. Texas flipped a trio of commitments on the morning of the first signing day (Dec. 15), highlighted by the former Ohio State Buckeyes pledge and four-star Little Elm cornerback Terrance Brooks.

Sark and the Longhorns staff also flipped the likes of the former Michigan Wolverines commit and three-star Westlake edge rusher Ethan Burke, and former Oklahoma Sooners commit/three-star Arlington-Seguin athlete Xavion Brice. Texas was able to flip this aforementioned trio of commitments all in the span of a couple of hours on the morning of Dec. 15.

But the movement isn’t doing for Sark and the Longhorns yet in the 2022 class on the first signing day. Texas now looks to be trending to get a commitment back from the touted four-star Lewisville wide receiver Armani Winfield.

The six most recent expert 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions all project Winfield’s commitment to land back with the Longhorns. And each of those Crystal Ball Predictions came in on the morning of the first signing day (Dec. 15).

Texas football trending to get the commitment of 4-Star WR Armani Winfield back

There are even seven analysts and publishers now in the Rivals FutureCast picking the commitment of Winfield to land with Texas. All of those picks in the FutureCast also came in on the morning of Dec. 15.

The Winfield saga is one of the craziest for the Longhorns of this entire recruiting cycle. Winfield was the first commitment for Sark in the Longhorns 2022 class. He looked to be a staple commitment for the Longhorns throughout 2021.

But the Michigan State Spartans started pushing to flip his commitment this fall and looked to have some real momentum in doing so last month. Winfield wound up de-committing from Texas in the midst of the regular season finale win over the Kansas State Wildcats on Black Friday, which obviously didn’t go over well with the coaching staff.

It sounds like Winfield regretted that decision pretty fast and ultimately wanted back into the 2022 class ahead of the first signing day. The question was whether Sark and the Longhorns staff would actually want Winfield back in this class after the way things went down with his de-commitment.

But the leading indicators are there now for Winfield to potentially land back in the Longhorns 2022 class during the Early Signing Period this week.

Winfield’s decision now looks to come down to the Baylor Bears, Michigan State, and Texas, if he announces on the first signing day. That was the intention for Winfield originally was to sign during the Early Signing Period this week, but we’ll continue to follow this ongoing saga with him.

Texas could really use another blue-chip wideout in the 2022 class. Outside of the offensive line, wide receiver is definitely the biggest area of need in the 2022 class with four-star Spearman (TX) athlete/wideout Brenen Thompson the only blue-chip currently at the position.
