Former Texas QB Casey Thompson having traction with Nebraska
Plenty of movement is already going on among former Texas football players entering the NCAA Transfer Portal this offseason. And there is none bigger in the transfer portal among former Texas players so far this offseason than the redshirt junior quarterback and former blue-chip recruit Casey Thompson.
Head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns were expected to lose at least one or two of their quarterbacks from the team this fall to the transfer portal. But Thompson put his name in the transfer portal earlier than most anticipated this offseason after the Longhorns landed a commitment from the former Ohio State Buckeyes freshman quarterback Quinn Ewers earlier this month.
Thompson put his name in the transfer portal back on Dec. 17, and no clear landing spot for him really emerged immediately upon that move. But there is a potential landing spot that is now starting to emerge for Thompson out of the portal early this offseason.
Nebraska reportedly a top candidate for former Texas football QB Casey Thompson out of the portal
According to a report from 247Sports (paid content) on Dec. 28, the Nebraska Cornhuskers could be an emerging top contender to land a commitment from Thompson out of the transfer portal this offseason. This doesn’t look to be a done deal by any means between Thompson and the Huskers.
But this is surely a development to watch in the pursuit of a commitment from Thompson out of the portal.
Nebraska lost their longtime starting quarterback to the transfer portal earlier this offseason, with senior Adrian Martinez landing with the Kansas State Wildcats. This opened the door for a quarterback with starting experience in the Power Five like Thompson to come in and potentially start right away in Lincoln.
Head coach Scott Frost offered Thompson during his recruitment out of high school when he was leading the way for the UCF Knights a few years back. The connection is there with Frost, and there is certainly some appeal for Thompson to play for new Nebraska offensive coordinator Mark Whipple after what he did with breakthrough signal-caller Kenny Pickett with the Pitt Panthers this season.
Texas finished up the 2021 season with a record of 5-7 (3-6 Big 12) following a win in their regular season finale on Black Friday at home over Kansas State. Thompson was Texas’ starting quarterback for most of the season that was.
