Baseball helping Texas pursue OU transfer WR Mario Williams
Among the biggest name in the middle of the month of January that head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program are going after is the former Oklahoma Sooners freshman wide receiver elite five-star recruit Mario Williams. Texas looks to be putting it all into getting a commitment out of Williams from the NCAA Transfer Portal right now.
The Longhorns coaching staff made a move in the right direction this week in pursuit of a commitment from Williams out of the transfer portal by hosting him on a visit in Austin this week. The fact that Texas is still hanging around in pursuit of Williams, despite the assumed heavy favor to the USC Trojans once he originally put his name in the transfer portal, is pretty impressive.
Some of that energy that we through the former Pitt Panthers wide receivers coach Brennan Marion would bring to the table as the next Texas wide receivers coach/passing game coordinator looks to be apparent in this regard. But there is another factor at work here that is apparently keeping the attention of Willimas on the Forty Acres.
Texas football actually finding momentum with former OU transfer WR Mario Williams
Texas has the baseball program in on the recruitment of Williams out of the transfer portal too. Knowing that baseball is actually an important aspect to wherever Williams takes his talents to next, the Longhorns have an opportunity here to get an edge over the Trojans.
While Texas clearly holds an edge at the moment in terms of its baseball program, both are historically great teams. Texas just happens to be the better baseball program right now. That’s nice timing that looks to be helping the Longhorns to try and get Williams to Austin.
Marion even took to social media on Jan. 13 to express his happiness with the baseball program likely in relation to the pursuit of Willimas.
Another factor in play for the Longhorns in the pursuit of Williams is the fact that Texas is closer to home for the Florida native than USC. That could also give the Longhorns an edge in the end in this recruitment.
Texas has already done well to land two transfer portal commitments so far this offseason. The first is the former Ohio State Buckeyes freshman quarterback Quinn Ewers, with the second being fellow former Buckeye and redshirt freshman cornerback Ryan Watts.
