Mouhamed Gueye

If the former Washington State Cougars talented and lengthy freshman 6-foot-11 and 215-pound big man Mouhamed Gueye ultimately ends up sticking around at the collegiate level, he should very much be on the radar of Beard and the Longhorns staff. Gueye really fits the bill of what the Longhorns need to help round out the frontcourt unit.

Texas struggled with some of the lengthier big men that they faced down the stretch last season. The Round of 32 loss to the three-seed Purdue Boilermakers was a good example of how the Longhorns struggled to deal with some of the more productive lengthy big men in key games. Purdue had multiple 6-foot-10+ big men on the roster, which proved to be too much for the Longhorns to handle.

That’s where adding someone such as Gueye sounds so appealing for the Longhorns. And I’d imagine Beard and the Longhorns have at least already pondered the idea of getting him to Austin this offseason.

Gueye was effective in multiple regards last season for the Cougars on both ends of the floor. He posted a 2.2 steal percentage and 2.5 block percentage during his freshman campaign. But that came while playing in less than 22 minutes per game last season.

In the last two months of last season, Gueye really started to figure out how to utilize his length more effectively. He registered a block percentage just south of six in the last two months of last season. In the month of February, he averaged around six rebounds per game and was nearly in the double-digits for rebounds per 40 minutes.

Gueye could be a nice addition to the Longhorns’ backcourt if he doesn’t ultimately take his talents to the NBA (or at least the G-League) next season. This is the type of big man that the Longhorns need to find in the portal at this point of the offseason.
