Texas Football: 4 early enrollees bound to breakout in spring game
CJ Baxter Jr., RB
There are two running backs that Texas fans are most excited to see in the spring game this weekend. And both are technically newcomers to this position group for the Longhorns this spring.
The first that the fans are going to be excited to see this weekend is the converted wide receiver and sophomore running back Savion Red. The Grand Prairie, TX, native Red is ready to fill the role as Texas’ swiss-army knife out of the backfield in the spring game, especially in the absence of redshirt senior running back Keilan Robinson (who is still dealing with a lower-body injury).
The second running back that the fans are excited to see on the Forty Acres this weekend is the No. 1 running back recruit in the nation in the 2023 class and Orlando Edgewater (FL) product CJ Baxter Jr. This uber-talented Florida native running back is bound to have an immediate impact on this RB room this year.
Baxter has proven himself all throughout spring ball as a running back with tremendous physicality, size, and great field vision. He’s also come along better than advertised as a receiver out of the backfield.
A key storyline to watch this weekend will be the pecking order for the running back touches in the spring game. Baxter will look to get an edge on the likes of redshirt sophomore running back Jonathon Brooks and sophomore Jaydon Blue.
Yet, Brooks and Blue got more of the first and second-team reps in practice this spring than Baxter. This will be Baxter’s opportunity to prove that he should be the guy in the backfield that can set the tone for Sark’s offense this fall.
And it sounds like Baxter will have momentum heading into the spring game this weekend, as Orangebloods reported on April 13 that he was a standout in the final practice of the spring.
The running backs will be one of the most important position groups to watch in the spring game this weekend. There is still a lot to prove for this position group heading into the fall.
