Despite Texas basketball's transfer portal dominance, one issue still persists

It's no secret that Sean Miller and Texas have been absolutely killing it in the transfer portal, but they still need to address one incredibly important area that plagued the team in 2025/2026.

The backup point guard spot.

Whenever Jordan Pope or Tramon Mark were on the bench last season, the offense didn't feel as smooth, and there seemed to be less ball movement overall. Simeon Wilcher and Chendall Weaver were "okay" with the ball but there was definitely a noticeable dropoff in production.

They added PG Isaiah Johnson in the portal, who was one of the top-ranked players at the position, but they still don't have anyone behind him. Though they could have plans to use a true freshman there like Bo Ogden or Joe Sterling, I'm not sure those guys have the type of ball-handling skills that would be required to be effective in Sean Miller's scheme.

Texas still has time to add a depth-level guard or two to the roster, it's just surprising that they haven't yet.

Some of the best available options would most likely be Florida State's Martin Somerville, Memphis' Curtis Givens III, or Saint Joseph's Deuce Jones. All three of these players have flashed at times for their previous schools, and they could be most effective in a rotational role at a place like Texas going forward.

It'll be very hard to be successful next year unless Coach Miller addresses the team's continuous lack of backcourt depth. The potential player wouldn't even have to be an above-average scorer necessarily; they just have to be able to run the offense correctly when Isaiah Johnson is taking a breather next season.
