The Texas Longhorns are hot on the hunt for five-star cornerback John Meredith III, and just a week after his official visit, he is already expected to commit to head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Horns.
Charlie Williams, a recruiting analyst, logged his expert prediction that Meredith would commit to Texas with a resounding 75 percent confidence. Meredith is the No. 1 cornerback in the class of 2027 and is one of the Horns' most highly sought prospects in the recruiting cycle.
"It just felt like home," Meredith told On Texas Football's Jordan Scruggs about his OV to the 40 Acres.
A native of Texas, Meredith only had three official visits on his calendar this summer: with the Longhorns, with the Texas A&M Aggies, and with the Ohio State Buckeyes.
He still had to make his trip to Ohio State when Williams logged his expert prediction, but things were already pointing toward the Horns as clear frontrunners in the cornerback's recruitment.
John Meredith III ruled ineligible for 2026 season
Beyond his recruitment process, Meredith has seen a small speed bump rise up in his athletic journey. Meredith recently made the move to North Crowley High School after starting his high school career at Euless Trinity in Fort Worth.
The UIL oversight committee, the District Executive Committee, ruled that he made the move strictly for athletic purposes, ruling that Meredith was ineligible for the upcoming season.

This isn't a reason to panic, quite yet at least, and even Meredith himself was trusting the process, pointing out that he could still appeal the ruling.
"It’s fine. It’s nothing too serious. We still have another appeal to go through, but it’s all in God’s hands. I’m not worried at all," Meredith said after the ruling was announced.
However, even as a sophomore and junior, Meredith already proved himself to be an incredible athlete, dominating the sport while playing snaps on both sides of the ball.
After his junior season, Meredith played in the Under Armour All-America Game, earning one tackle and one interception while playing limited snaps in the highly competitive scrimmage. He also earned MaxPreps Junior All-American honors after the 2025 season.
Meredith, despite the recent ruling, is one of the top targets for Sarkisian and the Longhorns, as well as a slew of other powerhouse teams. He received 18 offers from Division I programs, but even before Williams' expert prediction, Meredith was projected to stay in-state.
According to On3 and Rivals, the Horns have an 82.5 percent chance of landing Meredith's commitment, followed not very closely by the Aggies at 15.3 percent.
Meredith is the No. 1 cornerback in his recruiting class and is the No. 2 overall prospect in the country, also ranked second out of prospects from the state of Texas.

Were he to commit to Texas, Meredith would join an already top-10 recruiting class, but would become the highest-rated prospect in the group, rated well above current frontrunner Easton Royal, a five-star wide receiver committed to the Horns.
