Heartbreak continues after Texas baseball drops SEC series to Florida

The Texas Longhorns lost their regular-season series to the Florida Gators, but that wasn't the end of the Horns' heartbreak that week.

The regular season hit the rocks for the Texas Longhorns as the baseball team lost its final home series against the Florida Gators. With the loss, the Horns dropped to a 1-5 streak against SEC opponents, sitting at 20-7 overall.

As the SEC Tournament rapidly approaches, the Horns' struggles against conference opponents couldn't come at a worse time. However, the series loss to the Gators wasn't the only heartbreak that Texas suffered over the last few days.

Following the loss, Texas dropped from the No. 1 spot in the nation as the LSU Tigers and Florida State Seminoles leapfrogged the Longhorns. Now, according to D1Baseball, the Horns are the No. 3 team in the country with just one regular-season series remaining.

Not all hope is lost for Texas's dream season

At the end of the day, the Longhorns are still one of the best teams in the country with the No. 3 ranking and a 40-10 overall record. Not to mention, Texas is in its inaugural season in the SEC and has earned 20 wins against conference opponents.

Texas has its final regular-season matchup against the Oklahoma Sooners. While the rivalry series is set to take place in Norman, the Horns have had a significantly better season than OU, which currently sits with a 32-17 overall record and is currently on a four-game losing streak.

There is a star amid the darkness

Despite the losses to Florida and the series sweep against Arkansas, one young player has stood out as a star. Outfielder and true freshman Jonah Williams has not only been playing well, but he also brings a different energy to the game every time he steps on the field.

Williams, who is just 18 years old and had to graduate from high school early to play this season of baseball with the Horns, is also on the football team, set to play his first season for head coach Steve Sarkisian in the fall.

After Sunday's loss to Florida, Texas held a players' meeting in which the athletes discussed how they have to lock in for their final series of the regular season and ahead of the conference tournament.

Texas and Oklahoma are scheduled to start their three-game series on Thursday, May 15, with the first pitch set to go out at 6:30 p.m. CT.
