Here's why the Longhorns deserve to be a number one seed in the NCAA tournament

Texas women's basketball lost to the South Carolina Gamecocks in the SEC Championship game. With that loss, the Longhorns might not be a No. 1 seed in the Women's Basketball Tournament this year. Here's why they should be.

Texas women's basketball will hear where they will begin their quest for the Women's Basketball National Championship at 7 p.m. on ESPN. No one should be shocked if the Longhorns host a regional. Their overall record has earned them the right to host four teams in Austin at the Moody Center. However, one question still hovers around the Longhorns today: Will they be a No. 1 seed like last season?

There is some uncertainty amongst College Basketball writers because of how well many women's basketball teams played this season. It's tough to predict this season because South Carolina, Southern California, UConn, and Notre Dame have had fantastic seasons.

There can only be four number-one seeds in the tournament. Let's look at Texas Women's Basketball and see if they deserve to be named a number one seed tonight.

Why are some saying Texas deserves to be a number one seed?

It will be tough for Texas to be a number one seed later tonight after losing to South Carolina in the SEC Championship. That solidified them as one of the number one seeds in the country.

However, some ESPN bracketologists think Texas did enough to earn a spot at the top. Austin Statesman Texas Longhorns Reporter Danny Davis shared on X that ESPN bracketologist Charlie Creme said Texas has more Q1 wins (14) than UConn does this season (6).

They have racked up a lot of good wins this season. That stretch of wins against South Carolina, Kentucky, and LSU helped Texas show the Bracketologists that the SEC deserves two number one seeds. The SEC had both of its top teams competing for the conference title.

The fact that UConn doesn't have a strong enough conference compared to Texas is why the Longhorns could end up being a number one seed later tonight.

Another reason they could be a number one seed is that the top four teams in the country will probably be the number one seeds. Texas was ranked #1 in the nation heading into the SEC Tournament.

Since they lost to the Gamecocks in the SEC Championship Game, I'm sure they will probably slide down to No. 3 or No. 4 in the AP Top 25. Their overall record speaks for itself, and they still deserve to be a number one seed later tonight.

Whatever the selection committee puts the Longhorns in the bracket, I know the ladies are ready to compete and return to the Elite 8. They have some unfinished business, and that's winning the National Championship.

Given how good some other teams around the country are, it will be a tough road ahead for them. The Longhorns must take it one game at a time and not get caught looking at their next opponent. I've seen teams get upset in the tournament that get caught looking at possible future matchups.
