In a surprising twist, as the Texas Longhorns look to defend their National Championship and back up their more recent SEC Championship, the softball team has hit a bump in the road.
The No. 3 Horns lost their first Super Regional matchup against the No. 19 Arizona State Sun Devils in a 1-4 defeat, putting Texas at an immediate disadvantage.
Then, looking much more like the title-defending program that they are, the Horns earned a defensively dominant 4-3 victory in Game 2 to keep their postseason hopes alive.
Now, in a game that will determine who heads to the Women's College World Series and whose season is cut short, the Longhorns must take down the Sun Devils in a second consecutive game to keep their title-defending hopes alive.

As one of the midday matchups on Sunday, the Longhorns will look to defend their home turf once again. If they can't, their impressive season will come to an end.
This year, the Longhorns didn't have their most consistent performances, losing regular-season series to teams like the Arkansas Razorbacks. However, Texas also dominated the SEC Tournament, bringing home its first conference championship in over two decades.
In the Regional round of this year's NCAA Tournament, the Horns continued their dominance, demolishing Wagner in Game 1, run-ruling the Wisconsin Badgers in Game 2, and similarly shutting out the Baylor Bears in Game 3 to advance to the Super Regional.
In Game 1 against Arizona State, the Sun Devils were able to nearly shut down the usually-dominant Texas offense, only allowing one run by the Longhorns. In Game 2, Texas was able to find more of its usual hitting prowess, earning four runs and holding the Sun Devils to three of their own.
In what will be the final game of one of these teams' seasons, the Horns need to keep swinging well and hitting hard, or it will be Arizona State advancing to the College World Series.
