20 years ago, Jim Schlossnagle put his name on the map of college baseball as the head coach of the TCU Horned Frogs.
Since then, he worked his way up the totem pole, eventually becoming the head coach of the Texas Longhorns in 2025, thanks in large part to a long-lasting relationship with Texas AD Chris Del Conte, who was the Athletic Director at TCU while Schlossnagle was in Fort Worth.
Over the last two years, Schlossnagle has helped rebuild the Texas baseball program, and over the weekend, the Horns learned their fate for this postseason, earning a No. 1 seed and hosting a Regional in Austin.
After the 2026 bracket reveal, Schlossnagle was asked for his thoughts on it, and he made sure to give a nod to his former team (the Horned Frogs, and not the Texas A&M Aggies).
"You know I still have a lot of adoration for TCU, and I don't like the fact that you know I think it's been two of the last three years that they've slid off the bubble," Schlossnagle said
Texas Longhorns earn spot as Regional host
Last season, Schlossnagle also led Texas to a Regional, the Horns getting stunned on their home turf by the UTSA Roadrunners and eliminated after the first round.
This year, Schlossnagle and the Longhorns are prepared to do whatever is necessary to take the next step, hopefully advancing to the Super Regional, which they would host as one of the top seeds.
"We practiced as soon as we got off the bus on Saturday. We practiced [Sunday]," Schlossnagle said about the Horns' weekend work. "We've rested plenty, our players admittedly miss playing baseball, and when you only play one game in two weeks, that's not a good thing."
Of course, after earning byes through the first two rounds of the SEC Baseball Tournament, the Longhorns were eliminated in the quarterfinals by the Arkansas Razorbacks. They haven't played since, and are lacking any recent in-game experience.
"We need to mimic the game and mimic kind of our week, you know, play Sunday, play Tuesday, have our Wednesday practice, kind of the way you hear a football coach talk to prepare for the weekend," Schlossnagle said.
In the first game of the Austin Regional at UFCU Disch-Falk Field, the Horns will face Holy Cross on Friday, May 29, at noon CT. The game will be broadcast on the SEC Network.
