While Texas was preparing to host the Oregon Ducks in the Super Regional round of the NCAA Baseball Tournament, the Longhorns' softball team was securing its second straight National Championship at the Women's College World Series.

The women have set the standard for the rest of the Horns, and Texas baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle had to give his program's female counterpart a well-deserved round of applause.

"First of all, congratulations to Coach White and the softball team... awesome," Schlossnagle said. "What they've done over the last two years obviously is incredible, and continues to set the tone and raise the standard, or at least meet the standard at the University of Texas. So, I hope we can keep up."

Of course, the standard on the 40 Acres has always been and will always be about winning championships, whether in the conference or on the national stage.

Texas baseball strives to meet Longhorn softball's standard

Over the last two years, the Longhorns won both Women's College World Series titles, over none other than the Texas Tech Red Raiders on both occasions, and this year, Texas was also fresh off the win in the SEC Tournament title game.

While Texas baseball hasn't been able to win a conference championship quite yet, the Horns are primed to make their way back to the College World Series, taking a step in the direction of matching the softball team's standard.

Of course, Schlossnagle is only in his second season as the Horns' head coach. On the other side, softball head coach Mike White has been at Texas since 2019 and has led the Longhorns to three Women's College World Series appearances.

Since taking over in Austin, Schlossnagle has led the Horns to an 87-27 overall record, but has fallen well short of expectations in the postseason. Last year, Texas was eliminated in the Regional round by the UTSA Roadrunners. This year, Schlossnagle and the Longhorns have taken the next step, but simply making it to the Super Regional is far from the ultimate goal.

Throughout his head coaching career, Schlossnagle has advanced to seven College World Series. In 2024, which was his final season with the Texas A&M Aggies, he even advanced to the CWS final, but was bested by the Tennessee Volunteers. However, first things are first. The Longhorns are set to host the Ducks in a best-of-three series to determine which team will have its season end and which will advance to the CWS.

If Texas can secure two wins over Oregon, Schlossnagle and the Horns will punch their ticket to Omaha, where they will be one of eight teams vying for a spot in the College World Series final. Winning that National Championship would at least keep them closer to the blazing pace that White and the softball team are setting.

No. 6 Texas and No. 11 Oregon are scheduled to throw out the first pitch at 7 p.m. CT on Saturday, June 6, and Game 2 is scheduled to follow one day later at 8 p.m. CT.
