Joey McGuire fires back at Sark with a Texas wish he'll end up regretting

After a few less-than-ideal comments from Steve Sarkisian, one team is desperate to make the Texas Longhorns' leader eat his words.

Just a week ago, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian took a shocking dig at another team in the state, and while the Longhorns' leader didn't drop any names, almost every immediately came to the same conclusion.

"There's a team in our state that plays in another conference that has a schedule that I would argue if I played with our twos and our threes, we could go undefeated, and they'll probably make the CFP this year," Sarkisian said.

Everyone turned in Lubbock's direction, taking Sarkisian's words as a direct shot at the Texas Tech Red Raiders and head coach Joey McGuire.

Since then, McGuire has reportedly reached out to Tech's Week 1 opponent, Abilene Christian, and the Horns' Week 1 opponent, Texas State, to see if he could get Texas on his team's schedule instead.

"We would love to play the University of Texas in Week 1," McGuire said at the Big 12 spring meetings.

Longhorns could easily make Red Raiders regret a matchup

The two teams haven't faced each other since 2023, when the Horns absolutely obliterated the Red Raiders, securing a 57-7 victory and sending Texas Tech back to the dust-filled panhandle.

Since then, while Texas Tech has poured millions upon millions to try to keep pace with powerhouse programs like Texas, the Longhorns have undeniably had more success, even while competing in the more competitive conference.

While Sark walked back his earlier offseason dig at the Ole Miss Rebels, he hasn't had any public regrets about throwing another in-state program under the bus.

Simply put, Sarkisian knows just how good his program and his players are, and he earnestly believes that Texas is just that much better than Texas Tech.

With the season less than three months away, it is unlikely that the Longhorns and the Red Raiders could actually work out a way to switch their Week 1 matchups to face each other instead of Texas State or ACU.

However, if the two head coaches, the conferences, and the athletic departments can figure it out, it would be a perfect opportunity for the Horns to back up their head coach's belief in them and to make the Red Raiders eat their own head coach's words.
