The Texas Longhorns made it to the SEC Championship game at the end of their first season in the conference. A difficult accomplishment that is about to get even harder. Now, the SEC is considering implementing a Championship Weekend to determine the conference title winner.
Whether it be six teams, eight teams, or the whole conference, the SEC has been discussing expanding the championship game to a tournament-style format, similar to the recently expanded College Football Playoffs.
At this point, the SEC has only shared that it has considered including up to eight of 16 member teams – which would have included the Longhorns if it had been in place for the 2024 postseason
As future CFP formats are examined, conferences are looking into reinventing championship weekends.

The good news is that Texas asserted itself as a force to be reckoned with during its first season in the conference. However, now, the Horns might have to put in even more work to show that they deserve to be in the most dominant conference in the nation.
So far, head coach Steve Sarkisian has led the Longhorns to a Big 12 title and an appearance in the SEC Championship game, not to mention two consecutive appearances in the College Football Playoffs. Now, it might be just that much more difficult for Sark and the Horns to capture an SEC title as well as the National Championship win.
While nothing is finalized, and the CFP might expand before the SEC Championship weekend is ever official, Texas needs to start preparing now for the possibility of an even longer postseason schedule.
