It's Week 2 of the NFL preseason, and tonight, a slew of former Texas Longhorns are going to take the field, as the Miami Dolphins and Washington Commanders clash.
That includes former Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers, who was drafted by the Dolphins in 2025 but has played in just four games since then. While he has completed 66.3 percent of his pass attempts and earned an average rating of 85.5, he is far from his final destination in the NFL.
Now, as he takes the field in a preseason game, once again, Ewers has the chance to cement his place in the league, even if it isn't at Miami.
Former Texas QB Quinn Ewers could solidify his career in the league
Ewers has played a semi-permanent role as a backup quarterback for the Dolphins. Last season, Miami had then-starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa hold the reins of the offense with Ewers playing second chair.
However, once Tagovailoa suffered an injury, it gave Ewers the chance to earn his place as a starting quarterback in the NFL. Even with his completion percentage and overall rating, the former Longhorn fell short of expectations, throwing just three touchdowns while also throwing three interceptions.
Then, this offseason, Miami picked up quarterback Malik Willis, who is now expected to be the new starting quarterback for the Dolphins, sidelining Ewers once again.

More likely than not, as a seventh-round draft pick and as a quarterback who has fallen short of earning a starting spot, especially for a team like the Miami Dolphins without a franchise QB on the roster, Ewers will never be a QB1 on a regular basis.
Yet, with a good performance in a preseason game, he would quickly become a safe bet for any team in the league.
What does that mean? While Ewers might not be a go-to guy in the NFL, a career as a backup quarterback in the league is far from a bad gig. Playing well in a preseason game, even if it's against another team's second-string defenders, could make Ewers an appealing trade option and a trustworthy backup QB for the Dolphins or another franchise.

Now, none of this is to say that Ewers can't become a starting quarterback in the NFL. If an unfortunate injury happened to Willis, it is very likely that Ewers would step into the starting role, and we've seen a QB2 become a transformational QB1 at the expense of the former starter (i.e., Tom Brady taking the reins from Drew Bledsoe.
So far in his career, Ewers has earned 622 passing yards for three touchdowns and three interceptions. He has been sacked eight times, has run the ball on four occasions for 19 yards, and fumbled the ball twice.
Not great right?
However, if he can display ball security, more specifically, the ability to find the end zone without turning the ball over, Ewers could cement himself as a career backup quarterback in the NFL. Now, it's just time to see how he actually can perform against the Commanders.
