Texas' backcourt crisis goes from bad to worse as another guard leaves Austin

Nic Codie entered the transfer portal earlier today, and now they lose a guard who had the potential to start in 2026.

First Nic Codie, and now Simeon Wilcher. Unfortunately, after spending just one season at Texas, SG Simeon Wilcher has decided to join Codie in the transfer portal. No, he didn't have the biggest impact in the world in 2025/2026, but he was in line for a much bigger role next season. To be 100% honest, he was most likely penciled in as the starter at shooting guard heading into 2026.

Now, the team is set to lose another guard on top of Tramon Mark, Jordan Pope, and Chendall Weaver this offseason as those three have officially ran out of collegiate eligibility.

Sean Miller and Co. were already going to be aggressive in the transfer portal in an attempt to replace or upgrade the PG and SG positions. Now, it's an absolute must in terms of doing everything they can to find starting-quality guards.

Wilcher only averaged 5.6 PPG, 1.7 APG, and 1.8 RPG last season, but what he provided for the team couldn't really be valued in statistical form. His energy off the bench and defensive prowess helped the Longhorns get to the 2026 NCAA Tournament, and his occasional three-point shooting presented the team with an offensive spark in quite a few games.

He was basically a full-time starter at St.John's before transferring to Texas in 2025, so there's a chance that he just wants to find more playing time. Yes, if everything went perfectly for him this offseason he probably would've been closer to a full-time player next year, but there's a chance that Sean Miller told him that the team wants to find two new starting guards in the transfer portal. That type of thing happens all the time in both college football and basketball, and the vibes around this move have that type of feel to it.
