Texas basketball reportedly on verge of head coaching change after March Madness meltdown

Rodney Terry might be looking for a new job sooner rather than later after the Texas Longhorns blew a 13-point lead in the NCAA Tournament.

The abysmal 2024-25 season is over for the Texas men's basketball team. A disappointing performance in conference play, a shocking seed in the NCAA Tournament, and a blown 13-point lead in the Big Dance perfectly summarize the year for the Longhorns.

Now, Texas head coach Rodney Terry is playing the waiting game as the nation anticipates his impending departure from the program.

Terry became the Horns' interim head coach in 2022 following the firing of Chris Beard, who then joined the Ole Miss Rebels, and took over the official role on March 27, 2023. Now, after failing to lead the Longhorns past the First Four this season, Terry's job is highly at risk.

Following Texas' loss to Xavier in the play-game on Wednesday night, reports started flying in from every direction that the program would head in another direction for its head coaching role. Jeff Goodman, from The Field of 68, shared that sources had told him Texas was ready to move on.

Over his two-year stint as the Longhorns' official head coach, Terry took Texas to the Round of 32 (2024) and the First Four (2025). Only during the season when he was the interim HC did the Horns make it to the Elite Eight, where they also blew a 13-point lead to the Miami Hurricanes.

The biggest problem that Texas and its athletic director Chris Del Conte currently face is the fact that there aren't a lot of good replacements to fill the vacancy Terry would leave. Two of the top head coaches were already poached by Indiana and NC State, leaving fewer and fewer options for the Longhorns to choose from.

Del Conte and the Longhorns have yet to announce if Terry has been fired or not but Texas fans are (im)patiently waiting for the news to break.
