The Texas Longhorns have long held a spot as one of the best athletic programs in the world but there are a few facts that not everyone has right.

The Texas Longhorns are one of the most recognizable brands in college athletics, if not global sports, and have been cemented as a powerhouse athletic program for a long, long time.

However, beyond the diehard sports fans and those who have pulled for the Horns for decades on end, there are a few facts about Texas athletics that not everybody would be able to guess off the top of their heads.

As the Longhorns continue their dominant performances during their first season in the SEC, take a look back at some of the historic moments in Texas sports history:

1. The Texas Longhorns football team won its first official national championship in which year?

Answer: 1963

Over 60 years ago, the Longhorns played agains the Navy Midshipmen in the Cotton Bowl to determine the newest National Champion.

By the end of regulation, Texas had stormed past Navy to secure its first-ever National title with a resounding 28-6 victory under legendary head coach Darrell Royal.

2. Who is the all-time leading scorer in Texas Longhorns men's basketball history?

Answer: Terrence Rencher

Before playing for two seasons in the NBA and subsequently becoming a collegiate basketball coach, Terrence Rencher lit up the court for the Texas Longhorns.

Over four years for the Horns (1991-95), Rencher secured 2,306 career points to surpass the former record holder, Travis Mays (2,279).

3. Texas baseball has won six College World Series titles. Who was the head coach for their most recent championship?

Answer: Augie Garrido

Head coach Augie Garrido cemented himself as a Longhorn legend when he led the Horns to two College World Series wins (2002, 2005).

Garrido was the head coach for Texas' most recent CWS wins which brought their ring total up to six. The Longhorns have the most all-time appearances in the CWS with 38.

4. In the 2006 Rose Bowl, Vince Young's TD run secured Texas the national title over USC. What was the final score?

Answer: 41-38

Any Texas Longhorns fan who was above the age of 5 years old remembers quarterback Vince Young scrambling towards the end zone as time ran off the clock to secure the Horns the National Championship over the USC Trojans.

After the touchdown and the successful two-point conversion attempt, Texas held a three-point advantage and defeated the Trojans 41-38.

5. Texas softball won its first-ever Women's College World Series in what year?

Answer: They haven't won one yet

The Texas softball team has built itself into a powerhouse program. However, despite their numerous appearances in the Women's College World Series (7), the Horns have yet to capture their first National title.

In 2022 and 2024 the Longhorns made it to the WCWS Championship series but were bested by the Oklahoma Sooners on both occasions.
