Nearly 10 years ago, the Texas Longhorns hired Tom Herman as their head football coach, leading to four years of tumultuous feelings both on and off the field at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.

After he was ushered off the 40 Acres in 2020 and Steve Sarkisian was hired as the next head coach at Texas, the Horns and their fans alike exhaled a sigh of relief.

Herman went on to act as an offensive analyst for the Chicago Bears for one season before eventually becoming the head coach of the Florida Atlantic Owls. FAU parted ways with him in 2024. Since then, he has been in employment purgatory. That was, until last week.

The Florida State Seminoles hired Herman to their coaching staff. When his FSU contract was made public earlier this week, it immediately had Texas fans getting a good laugh at their former head coach's expense.

Tom Herman is not just going without a set salary, but he is making an hourly wage of just $25 per hour. If you do the math, and if he works 40 hours per week for 52 weeks, Herman would make just $52,000 a year before taxes.

In other words, Herman is set to make about as much as an entry-level college sports staff writer (yes, I'm talking about myself).

Now, as someone who worked as a head coach for the Houston Cougars, Longhorns, and Owls, Herman is set for life when it comes to how much money he has to his name. However, as someone with those roles on his resume, one would assume that he would at least earn a six-figure salary, regardless of the role he holds.

Of course, Herman could easily clock more than 40 hours a week working for a college football team, and could easily work more than a regular Monday through Friday, 9-to-5 shift. So, he could ultimately earn well over $52,000 in a year.

Yet, for a little better perspective, Florida State head coach Mike Norvell is set to make $10.3 million this season. He is one of the head coaches at risk of being fired if the season does not go according to plan for him.

Sarkisian is set to make $11.05 million. When he was with the Longhorns, Herman was earning about $6.75 million per year.

Herman's job is listed as "assistant coaching staff with game analysis" under the description of duties on the Seminoles' appointment details. That's a role that could easily make upwards of $100,000 at a Power Conference program like FSU.

At the end of the day, Herman is employed once again, and any work is better than no work, but for now, or maybe forever, Texas fans can continue to get a good chuckle at their former head coach.
