Game rewind: Texas-Iowa State last year

The Texas-Iowa State series has been one-sided for the most part, with Texas dominating. However, the last few years the Cyclones have played Texas tough. And in 2013, the game ended with a little controversy.

Texas walked out of Ames with a win, but Iowa State fans think the wrong team left victorious.

The Longhorns came into the game off a 31-21 win over Kansas State. But it also played without its starting quarterback. David Ash was sidelined with concussion-related symptoms. Case McCoy got the start.

Johnathan Gray put Texas on the scoreboard first with a 45-yard run for a touchdown. Anthony Fera added a 29-yard field goal as Texas had a 10-0 lead after one quarter. Things got interesting after that.

Iowa State rattled off 13 straight points to help the Cyclones take the lead. It was the Sam B. Richardson/Aaron Wimberly show. The duo combined for all 15 touches on a 92-yard drive, capped off by Richardson finding Wimberly for an 11-yard touchdown pass to tie the game.

With Iowa State nursing a 13-10 lead, McCoy moved Texas to the Cyclones’ 44 yard line with 11 seconds left in the half. After an incompletion, McCoy heaved a pass downfield as time expired. John Harris, surrounded by three Iowa State defenders, somehow came down with the ball for a touchdown. That crazy play gave Texas the 17-13 halftime lead.

Iowa State retook the lead halfway through the third quarter when Richardson found Quenton Bundrage for a 97-yard touchdown pass. Bundrage beat Duke Thomas and simply out-raced the Texas safeties for the score.

It didn’t take long for the Longhorns to respond. McCoy used two pass interference calls and four completions to Mike Davis to get Texas into Iowa State territory. Joe Bergeron romped in from six yards out to reclaim the lead for the Longhorns, 24-20.

Things became interesting in the fourth quarter. Bergeron fumbled, giving Iowa State the ball at the Texas 37. Two plays later, Wimberly scampered in from 20 yards out to give the Cyclones the 27-24 lead. Iowa State threatened to put the game away with a drive deep into Texas territory. The Cyclones had two cracks at the end zone from the Texas four-yard line, but came up empty. Cole Netten’s field goal extended the lead to 30-24.

  • Texas took over at its 25-yard line with 3:40 left. The Longhorns used a mix of run and pass plays to get to the Iowa State two-yard line. The drive was aided by three defensive penalties, including a pass interference call on third down to give Texas the ball at the two.

Gray gained a yard on first down. The ball appeared to come out, and Cyclone defender Jeremiah George scooped it up and began running the other way. The officials had, however, ruled that Gray was down. On second down, Gray fumbled again, but this time he recovered it for no gain. McCoy called his own number on third down to give Texas the 31-30 lead after the PAT.

Richardson got his team to the Texas 48 before a Jackson Jeffcoat interception sealed the victory for the Longhorns.

McCoy finished the game 26/45 for 244 yards and a touchdown pass. Gray had 89 yards rushing on 16 carries. Richardson had 262 yards passing, and chipped in with 83 yards on the ground. Wimberly rushed for 117 yards on 29 carries. Iowa State had 10 penalties for 118 yards.
