Texas Longhorns Recruiting: Offensive Players Still In Play

facebooktwitterreddit

It was a huge weekend for the Texas Longhorns recruiting class of 2015 as Charlie Strong picked up verbal commitments from five highly-touted recruits in just four days. With National Signing Day looming, the positions are filling up very quickly, and there may not be room for everyone that the Horns are going after.

Here’s a look at some of the offensive players that Texas hopes to add.

Running Backs

The Longhorns appear to be in good standing with Rockwall RB Chris Warren, who has already taken his visit to Austin but plans to also take visits to Texas Tech, Washington, and Oklahoma State. Working in the Horns’ favor is the fact that his parents are fans of Charlie Strong and the program he’s trying to build. This one looks good for the Horns, but it’s not quite over yet.

Nicholas Brossette, though currently committed to LSU, is interested in hearing what the Longhorns have to say. It will be difficult to pull him away from the Tigers considering he grew up in Baton Rouge, but he does have an official visit planned to meet with Charlie Strong on January 16th.

Considered by many sites to be the state’s top back, Soso Jamabo is still on the Longhorns’ radar, though this one seems to be a long-shot. The uncommitted running back from Plano West has no immediate plans to visit Austin, but there are some around the program who feel that a visit before signing day isn’t out of the question.

Quarterbacks

Anyone who has been playing attention will tell you that the Longhorns are in dire need of quarterback depth, and adding another quarterback to this class in addition to Zach Gentry should be a priority for Strong’s staff.

One name that’s been floating around as having interest in Texas is Baltimore, Maryland, dual-threat QB, Kai Locksley. Locksley is currently committed to FSU, however, he has a visit to Austin scheduled for January 23rd. The coaches seem to really value Locksley and his father, the offensive coordinator at Maryland, has some personal ties to Charlie Strong .

Other than Kai, there are some other JUCO and transfer names that have been thrown out there, but nothing of great significance at  this time.

Wide Receivers

The Longhorns likely lead for Ryan Newsome, a receiver out of Aledo, Texas. Though not yet committed anywhere, he lists Texas, Tennessee, and UCLA as his top schools. He visited in Austin in early December.

According to a statement that he made on Twitter over the weekend, there is a chance that he announces his decision as early as tomorrow.

DeMarkus Lodge is another receiver that Texas is going after, though they are definitely on the outside looking in. The Cedar Hill receiver is not yet committed, and has visited only LSU and USC. He has no visit to Austin planned, but Strong is still trying to get him onto campus. It’s thought that the Tigers lead for Lodge.

Offensive Line

Perhaps the most important recruit left on the board for the Longhorns is five-star offensive tackle from Memphis, Tennessee, Drew Richmond. Currently a verbal pledge to Ole Miss, Richmond admits to having always liked the Longhorns and has hoped from an offer from them for awhile. He plans to visit Texas on January 30th. Though distance could be a factor for Richmond, I expect that Strong’s staff will pull out all the stops for the 6’5″, 323-pound recruit.

As successful as Strong has been adding playmakers to the Longhorns recruiting class in recent weeks, he’s not quite done just yet.

Join us tomorrow as we preview some of the top defensive recruits that the Longhorns still hope to bring to Austin.
