Longhorn Recruiting: Big Recruiting Weekend Ahead For Texas

facebooktwitterreddit

We are heading into the home stretch of the recruiting cycle for the 2015 recruiting class. With National Signing Day rapidly approaching every school will be looking to make one last push on prospects on their recruiting boards. Longhorn recruiting is full steam ahead and there won’t be any lack of drama as Texas battles it out for the signatures of many high profile prospects.

Charlie Strong had recruits pass on opportunities to officially visit during the season and put off their official visits until late January. With the month of January half way over we are about to see the first of three big recruiting weeks for the Texas Longhorns and Strong will be able to make his pitch to recruits without having to worry about working around game planning for an opponent. Now he and his staff can roll the red carpet out for recruits and their parents and have all hands on deck as they descend upon Austin.

For this first recruiting weekend the Longhorns will host two of the top uncommitted prospects on their board in Holton Hill and Kris Boyd, as well as LSU commit Nick Brossette. All three would be huge additions to the recruiting class if Strong is able to land their signatures come National Signing Day.

Lets take a look at the visitors list for the upcoming weekend.

Committed Visitors

  • Kirk Johnson- Athlete

Johnson is an interesting player. Most thought he would end up at safety, but after good showing at the Under Lights Camp and a strong senior year it looks like he will start out at running back.

  • Patrick Vahe- Offensive Lineman

Texas was long overdue to tap into the Polynesian pipeline over at Euless Trinity. Vahe played left tackle for the Trojans, but he projects at either guard or center at the next level. I can see him cracking the two deep early on in his career.

  • Louis Brown- Defensive End

Brown is an intriguing prospect due to the athleticism he possesses. He played on both sides of the ball for Burton, but he worked out as edge rusher at the Under The Lights camp and that’s where he projects going forward. There have been some whispers of him struggling with grades, it will be something to monitor going forward.

  • Deshon Elliott- Defensive Back

Elliott is a big, physical safety that will come down hill and strike you. Some have compared him to former Louisville safety Calvin Pryor and think Charlie Strong will use him the same way. Elliott flirted with some other schools during the process, but has now solidified his commitment to Texas. He was working on Nick Brossette during the UnderArmour All American game so that will be something to watch this weekend.

    • Holton Hill- Defensive Back

Texas fans have long waited for the big corner from Houston Lamar to take an official to Austin and their wishes have finally been answered. With the depth in the secondary being thin going into the spring, I can see Hill being an instant contributor if he signs with Texas. Texas made the cut to Hill’s final three and sits in a good spot with him, time to see if Strong can close the deal.

    • Kris Boyd- Defensive Back

Just like with Hill, Texas fans have been anxiously waiting for Boyd to get back on campus. Boyd originally planned to announce his commitment on Christmas before backing off that date and saying he wanted to take his visits. He has been all over the map with who his favorite schools are, but Texas has always been firmly in the mix for the Gilmer stud. With younger brother Demarco holding a Texas offer and his cousin Curtis Brown doing some recruiting on the side, Texas is in a good spot for Boyd as well.

    • Nick Brossette- Running back

This recruitment is interesting and a little tougher to read. Unlike Boyd and Hill, Brossette has been committed to LSU for months now and calls Baton Rouge home. Not only his Baton Rouge home, his high school is a stone’s throw away from LSU’s campus. Despite those obstacles Brossette has seemed to only grow fonder and fonder of Texas over time and is only considering Texas outside of LSU.

Brossette got close to Texas commit Deshon Elliott while they were in Orlando during the UnderArmour game and Elliott seems to think Texas has more than a puncher’s chance of flipping Brossette from the Tigers. Only time will tell if that prediction will come to fruition, but getting Brossette on campus for an official isn’t a bad start.

It will be interesting to see how the Longhorn coaching staff does this weekend with their targets this weekend. It certainly doesn’t hurt that you will have almost a handful of committed players on campus at the same time selling the program. I think Hill and Boyd are the most important visitors by far and the staff will need to put their best foot forward with both having visits following this weekend.
